I Knew Kids Who Wouldn’t Leave The House Without a Shape Up (2025)
Live performance with audio recording, 25 minutes
Invited by Haul Gallery to take part in their Raised in Brooklyn exhibition at the long-standing arts nonprofit Electronic Arts Intermix in downtown Manhattan, Shirt used the occasion to debut a new performance work. Giving himself a haircut—specifically a bald fade—live, using one fixed and one handheld mirror, his actions were closely filmed and simultaneously projected large on the wall next to him. A pre-recorded 20-minute audio essay by Shirt played throughout the performance, featuring an audible freestyle exchange between Shirt and his longtime barber Boogie during a haircut, and a layered conversation between artists Arthur Jafa and Greg Tate.
