With the initial idea to collaborate coming from the music video director Derek Pike, a statement at the time of the work’s release explained the involvement of the rapper Jay Electronica, who is said to have personally encouraged Pike to keep his word about working with Shirt. Filmed in a friend’s Brooklyn basement, “For The Record” depicts Shirt rapping into the camera smoking a cigar, the clip later revealing the artist is hanging upside down by his feet in the presense of a topless woman. Filming multiple takes over many hours, Shirt actually hung upside down and smoked the cigar for the performance. In interviews he said the filming took a toll on his body physically for the next several days.
